Title: Joanna vs. The Enterprise

I'd love to see a take-your-daughter-to-work scenario where young Joanna McCoy comes to stay with Bones on the Enterprise for a week. Obviously SHENANIGANS occur, because at least some of that attitude must be passed down. Bonus points for Joanna having a crush on another crew member.

“Mr. Scott,” McCoy says; his voice unnaturally calm as he leans in closer to a very nervous looking Scotsman. “Care to explain what my nine-year old is doing on top of your warp core?”

“Well,” Scotty swallows quickly, a nervous half smile flashing across his face. “She wanted to know how it worked, and I couldn’t see the harm in letting her about, she’s actually quite good at fetching the proper tools and whatnot –”

“You couldn’t see the harm in letting her climb about the goddamned warp core?” McCoy practically snarls the last half of that sentence, and his fist clenches tightly at his side. The engineer looks a bit frightened, and the paternal part of him notes that he should keep this type of expression for when his daughter gets her first boyfriend. If she makes it off that damn deathtrap.

“Daddy!” Joanna’s head peaks down from the top of the warp core, and distracts Bones from his determined terrorising of the chief engineer. “Daddy, look what Mr. Keenser and I found!” She waves her hand in the air, an irregularly shaped dilithium crystal clutched in her dirty fist. Her grin pacifies McCoy slightly, but the fact that she’s leaning over so far kicks his paranoia into high gear.

“Joanna,” McCoy moves over to her as fast as he can on the narrow catwalk, craning his neck up to his little girl. She giggles and gives him another wave which has McCoy’s pulse jumping in a panic. He waves her back, his hand a good span away from her perch on top of the glowing glass. Keenser’s rock like head pops up from behind his daughter, and the little thing has the sense to tug his girl back a bit before disappearing back to whatever the two were doing up by the metal junction.“Honey, move back from the edge, I don’t want you to fall off.”

“Len, stop freaking out,” Chapel’s voice comes from behind him, and he turns slightly with a scowl to greet her. She’s climbing up the rickety ladder to the catwalk, and judging by the blissful looks on the faces of the ensigns below her, she’s wearing her usual skirt uniform. He gives them his best glare, which given the current situation must be terrifying. The ensigns all suddenly find more interesting things to hold their attention as McCoy grips Christine’s arms to lift her over the lip of the ladder, her own hands balancing on his as she touches down. “Nothing’s going to happen to her, she’s fine.”

“Fine?” McCoy’s grip tightens slightly and he frowns down at her. “She’s crawling all over the warp core with naught but a pint sized... whatever the hell Keenser is to watch over her.” Christine rolls her eyes and pats his shoulder with one hand as she wiggles out of his grip to go over to the edge of the antimatter reactor.

“She’ll be fine, there’s tons of room up there, and it’s only about a metre and a half drop besides. Didn’t you climb things when you were a kid?” Christine gives Scotty a little wave, and the other man seems immeasurably relieved not to be alone with the raging doctor in such a high place. McCoy scowls and crosses his arms over his chest, coming up behind his aide to look up at his giggling daughter.

“Sure,” Bones drawls, trying not to lean in closer to smell Christine’s hair, the scent of apples is clinging about her, making him long for a shower of his own. Preferably with his daughter not in imminent danger of falling and splitting open her head. He blinks and continues with his lecture, trying to ignore the attraction his clean, pretty nurse has after three years of being alone since the divorce. “But I climbed trees, not reactors on starships.”

“Trees and reactors aren’t all that different really,” Chapel looks over her shoulder and smiles up at him, while Joanna makes a sound of delight overhead. Christine turns her attention to the metal end of the warp core that Joanna and Keenser are focusing on, her hands moving over the dips in the metal in a fond gesture. “Getting up them is relatively easy. It’s the getting down that’s trickier.”

“Oh really,” McCoy rolls his eyes slightly, and receives a sharp poke in his chest from a smiling Christine. “Ow, woman.”

“Don’t call me ‘woman’, Doctor.” Christine gives him a mock scowl, and her cheeks go slightly rosy. “If we’re off duty, call me Chris. If you keep rolling your eyes, they’ll get stuck like that.”

“We both know that’s medically impossible, Chris,” McCoy drawls out her name, enjoying the sparkle that comes to his aide’s eyes. They smile rather stupidly at each other for a moment, before Joanna’s exclamations of delight draw their eyes upwards to the excited nine year old.

“Daddy! Catch me!” Joanna calls down, several crystals gathered in her arms. McCoy reaches up and catches his girl under her arms as she slides down the glass side of the warp core, her excited giggle soothing his jangled nerves. “Okay, I think I got everything for Mr. Scott.”

“Aye lass,” Scotty riffles through the selection of irregularly shaped crystals in Joanna’s arms, and shoots a glance over to Keester who blinks in that strange manner of his. “Right then, would you like to turn her on?”

“Can I?” Joanna turns big pleading eyes towards her father, who melts like putty under that gaze. He looks up at Chapel who shrugs a shoulder before he lets out a sigh. Joanna squirms, knowing that he’s caving.“Oh please Daddy, I’ll be really, really careful, I promise.”

“Aw heck,” McCoy lets her down onto the catwalk, and she gives him a hug around the knees with one arm as she races down the catwalk to join Scotty at the consol for the warp core. “What kind of kid wants to play with a warp core?”

“I did,” Chapel says dryly, coming up beside him. McCoy looks at her as the hum of electricity goes through the air, matter beginning to swirl in the chamber beside them. Joanna’s happy laugh echoes down the catwalk and Christine smiles slightly. “Growing up on a starship isn’t the worst thing, you know.” Chapel looks at him for a beat with an unreadable expression before walking over to Joanna who is hugging an unresponsive Keenser excitedly.

McCoy stands back, and wonders what she means.

EEEE. Sorry it's so late darlings, I was trying to write this other fic, and didn't give up on trying to get past a block for too long ;_;. To make up for it, this is two pages long, about a half page longer than normal :DDDDD

EDIT: Saturday

I love it! And don't worry about it. I wait weeks to update anything (if not months:/)
I love Joanna wants to play in engineering! and no- Joanna growing up on the Enterprise wouldn't be a bad thing. Bones would soften up and everyone would cater to her whims (much like Naomi on Voyager).

HAHA! Thats the image I had in my head, that kids play around in starships sometimes. I think it would be so interesting to have your kid on board, to be raised in that environment - hopefully more Naomi than Wesley DDD:

Oh no- Wesley is the WRONG kid to be hoping your child would be like. Naomi had boundaries and expectations and had to work to get what she wanted. Wesley was allowed to pilot the ship with no academy training!
Also think of all the experiences you would get on a starship- you've got science section, medical, engineering, piloting, navigation, theory, botany... I could go on forever! The richest of educations. It's like being a child of the army. You can't escape it (I would know), especially if you're the only child in an area. My sisters and I were the only children of my father's troop and GOD. I remember when he brought us with him to work- the different sections would steal us away and try to convince us their part was the best LOL.

You were a miliary kid? I may attack you to pick your brain for a different fic, don't be supprised if you get a long rambling message from me sometime in the future XDDD.

I think it would be awesome to have Joanna on board, but Bones is all DISEASE! DANGER! DARKNESS! DEAAAAAAATH! I'm also poking Memory Alpha to see if theres any cannon about kids on starships in that era.

I had a mental image of all the main cast trying to steal Joanna and make her part of their section, it made me LOL for real XD.

Just read all the series - not big into family stuff but this is cute *G* Joanna beating Spock at chess, hehe. Joanna going to climb all around. And some McCoy/Chapel lingering at the edges without me going all crazy - well done! :)

I know, me, writing gen? ZE HORROR. It's been realy interesting trying to do this, actually - but Joanna is very cute, and I like the different side of Bones that his kid brings out.

McCoy/Chapel has infested my brain and just. won't. get. out.
I'm working on the next chapter of my smut fic for them, and I keep having to edit out bits where its just extraneous sex. They're a very distracting fictional couple XD. Thanks so much!

Oh this is awesome! I love this series to little, bitty pieces. I would have totally loved to play on a warp core when I was a kid. The Chapel/McCoy bits are still making me grin like a crazy person. Scotty and Keenser would be such fun babysitters!

I know right? I think my mental image is more a sideways version of Voyager's warp core than the weird water tube industrial version that we saw in JJ's movie, but I figure people will jsut go with it XD. I'm glad the shippiness isn't putting people off, I just think that those two spend so much of their time together in that little sick bay - you know? Things happen ;)

Keenser reminds me of a really rocky teddy bear, I love her squishing him and he being all <(._.)> .

PS. that really looks more like yoda than Keenser, but you know what I mean >_>

Awww so sweet! :D

Very funny, too! judging by the blissful looks on the faces of the ensigns below her, she’s wearing her usual skirt uniform. Made me lol so hard. Looking forward to the McCoy/Chapel build-up is going.
