I'd love to see a take-your-daughter-to-work scenario where young Joanna McCoy comes to stay with Bones on the Enterprise for a week. Obviously SHENANIGANS occur, because at least some of that attitude must be passed down. Bonus points for Joanna having a crush on another crew member.

*gg* Joanna vs. Spock, giggling ensues.

“Oh for the love of – ” McCoy groans as he steps into the mess hall, looking at his daughter and her newest playmate. He should have known that ‘go play a game, sweetie’ translated to ‘escape the sick bay and give your father a heart attack’ in nine year old-ese. “What in the seven Tholian hells is she doing?”

“Shhh,” Chapel smacks him on the shoulder with an absent hand, grinning in delight at the scene before them. Bones scowls at her in response, confident that this is all somehow Spock’s fault. His traitor of a Nurse merely grins wider, and tugs McCoy over to Kirk who is whispering suggestions to the oddly quiet nine year old. “She’s got him on the run. He’ll never live this down.”

“Wait, she’s winning?” Bones crouches down to his daughter’s level, eyeing the chessboard with renewed interest and a little awe. Joanna doesn’t even blink to acknowledge his presence, her dark brow furrowed in concentration that makes a little ball of pride glow in his chest.

“Indeed,” comes a cool voice from across the table, emotionally flat in a way that grates on McCoy’s nerves on a daily basis. Spock has his eyebrow raised almost to his hairline; his dark eyes betraying nothing but a focus on the board in front of him. “Doctor, it is fascinating that your progeny is capable of extraordinary strategy and forethought, since you frequently show to disadvantage during our matches.”

Bones doesn’t know if he should be insulted, or proud that his nine year old plays better chess than he does.

“Checkmate,” Joanna says, a golden smile spreading over her face. She tries to reach across the board, and McCoy reaches out a hand to balance her small frame as she pushes her bishop forward with her fingertips. Spock lets out a humming sound as his other eyebrow ratchets upward to join the first. “This game is fun!”

“It has been a most enjoyable two hours, Joanna.” If Bones didn’t know better, he would say the Vulcan sounded almost amused as he began rearranging the pieces to their original locations. “Perhaps you could endeavour to work with your father on his playing, you would be an invaluable asset.”

“Pointy eared – I’ll show you an asset,” McCoy grumbles as he lifts a giggling Joanna up into his arms, sending a glare at Kirk and Chapel who are laughing in the background. He scowls for good measure at Spock as well, but the alien bastard only blinks up at him with that unruffled gaze that makes McCoy’s jaw clench.

“Now daddy,” Joanna mock frowns at him in a somewhat eerie imitation of his own glower, made all the more disturbing by the fact that her small face is about two inches from his own. “Don’t be mean to Mr. Spock. He is only being logiscicle.”

“Logical,” Kirk offers as he grins his fool head off. Chapel almost collapses against her Captain as McCoy gives them his best death stare, ruined by the presence of a giggling nine year old in his arms. He mutters under his breath as he storms away from them, almost growling at poor young Chekhov on his way out of the mess. His mood darkens as Joanna chatters on about how nice Mr. Spock is, and she hopes he’ll play with her and Mr. Jim again.

By the time they reach his quarters he’s thought of five ways to kill the Vulcan without anyone knowing.
